About the Registry

Clean air is a top priority for this government. Ontario continues to reduce emissions that create smog and acid rain.

Ontario’s Emissions Trading Regulations 397/01 and 194/01, became law on December 31, 2001 and May 21, 2005 . They cap emissions from fossil-fuel power plants and seven industrial sectors, and enables allowance and credit emissions trading - the first legally recognized emissions trading system in Canada.

This Fact Sheet provides a brief overview of how emissions trading works.

Reg. 397 and O. Reg. 194/05. It also provides the primary mechanism for public notification and comment on key portions of these transactions.
